The mission of the North Middle School library is to be the hub of the North Middle School learning community and to help develop 21st Century learners. The library incorporates the priorities of a 21st Century community school to provide an environment that nurtures curiosity and furnishes resources and support for students, staff and parents. The resources and support extend beyond the library walls so the students can access, evaluate and use information for their educational, information and recreational needs.
Meet the Librarian
Hello, my name is Leatha Roland and I am the librarian here at North Middle School. I have been at North Middle School for 20 years. I have taught 6th grade Social Studies, Reading, Family and Consumer Sciences and Career Exploration and currently the librarian.
I have two children and six grand-children. There are many different hobbies that I enjoy: Cooking, traveling, crafts and family just to name a few. I also enjoy reading many different types of material, fiction, non-fiction, and magazines are my favorites. I read professionally as well as for personal enjoyment and can usually be found with a book close by.

Library Policies and Procedures
The North Middle School Library is typically open from 7:30 AM to 3:30 PM on days when school is in session. Students are welcome to stop in anytime to check out library material, work on homework or a school project, or to just relax and have some fun.
Students typically have the opportunity to visit the library once a week during their reading classes. Students may check out two paper books and two electronic books at one time. Books are checked out for a two week period and may be renewed if needed. Students are expected to use their library materials responsibly, this includes: not damaging books by tearing, dropping or writing in them, returning them to the library on time, and keeping them safe and secure when not reading them. The student is responsible for any lost or damaged books, they have the option of purchasing the library a new copy or paying the replacement cost of the book.

Electronic Resources (e-books and audio books)
Our library has a collection of both electronic books (ebooks), and digital audiobooks. You must have a library account to use these items. To access the
electronic, digital resources go to the library's on-line catalog (link above). Once there, log in and then go to the link called "FollettShelf". Both
electronic books and digital audiobooks can be accessed through this site. You may check out any of these digital resources and use them on many different
types of internet linked devices (computers, laptops, tablets, smartphones, etc...). These resources can be used online or downloaded into a device and they
are available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. There is also a district-wide electronic resources collection located on the district's Overdrive site. To access Overdrive select the link below and log in. Your username is the first five letters of your last name and the first three letters of your first name. Your password is set to your lunch code (numbers only).There are special reader apps available for certain devices and all of them may be downloaded at no cost. Feel free to stop in our library with your device if you need assistance using the electronic resources.

South Dakota State Library Electronic Resources
The South Dakota State Library provides a great group of electronic resources for student use. The have paid for subscriptions to electronic encyclopedias like World Book, electronic periodical databases like Proquest, technical assistance services like Chilton's, and a wide variety of others like Mango languages and Ancestry. When students are here at school our computers automatically link to the South Dakota State Library and all of these site work without needing a user name or password. These sites may also be used from home if the student is using the special username and password assigned to North Middle School. We are not allowed to publish that username and password information but we have it available anytime at the North Middle School Library. To use these resources first go to the South Dakota State Library webpage, then select the on-line resources tab at the top of the page.
